Government reporting requirements
NGER (National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act)
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 was passed in 2007 establishing a mandatory corporate reporting system for greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production.
The initial phase (2008-09) of the Act will require around 1,000 of Australia’s largest companies, government bodies and energy producers to report their emissions and consumption from the 2008 -09 financial year.
Who has to report their energy consumption?
For the financial year 2008-09 the act states an entity is required to report if:
- They have operational control of a facility that emits 25 kilotonnes or more of greenhouse gases (Co2 equivalent), or produce or consume 100 terajoules or more of energy.
- Their corporate group emits 125 kilotonnes or more greenhouse gases (CO2 equivalent) or 200 terajoules of energy.
In order to comply with the Act data must be inputted in accordance with National Greenhouse and Energy reporting guidelines. The data relates to detailed information relating to your electricity, gas, water fuel and material consumption and waste.
